iNACOL Recognizes Fire and Ice as Online Innovator Award Winner

Fire and Ice’s Organic Garden Project was recently named Finalist for the 2009 Global Junior Challenge (GJC), an international competition based in Rome, Italy that rewards the most innovative projects employing cutting-edge ICT technologies in the field of youth education and training. Launched in 2008 by Cindea Hung of Taiwan, the Fire and Ice Organic Garden Project has attracted teachers and students worldwide from countries including Turkey, Israel, Mali, Colombia, and Indonesia.

In the Nov/Dec issue, Elluminate (and its Fire and Ice program) was named one of the Top 10 Best Corporations in Global Development 2008. We're listed alongside such heavyweights as American Express, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Elluminate, Google, GE, and Johnson & Johnson. The article discusses companies who "use technology and innovative expertise to enhance the lives of poor people and communities around the world." It also notes that "many companies are changing the way they operate by bringing in nonprofits as key partners in growth."

Bringing Heroes Online

Elluminate's Fire and Ice enabled students to share information about home towns, schools, and heroes. Recently, schools in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Israel worked together online to write stories and help each other understand local cultural heroes.

Elementary Schools from North America, Iraq, and Africa Collaborate Live to Promote Peace

The Machinto project is based on a Japanese picture book about a little girl who is killed in the Hiroshima bomb in 1945. The girl comes back to life as a dove who spreads peace and hope to children in the world who are affected by war. Over the past several months, students from various countries have leveraged the internet to communicate their feelings and thoughts about this topic by engaging in online forums, sharing photographs and artwork, and developing their own picture book about peace and friendship.

Sponsored by The Tech Museum of Innovation, one of the country's premier science and technology museums, and presented by Applied Materials, Inc., The Tech Museum Awards honor individuals who are applying technology to benefit humanity and spark global change. Chosen by a panel of prestigious international judges, the Laureates must demonstrate the use of technology to significantly improve the human condition.
